New research published in the Microbiology Society indicates that Borrelia bacterium can change shape and stay dormant in response to unfavourable conditions. Current diagnostic tools do not test for novel Borrelia structures and are therefore prone to cause misdiagnosed or undiagnosed Lyme disease cases.
